02 Jun Classifying steel door frames
Industrial jargon used in classifying steel door frames is usually confusing. The same extends to door frame general usage and purpose too. In terms of general know-how, I believe there is minimal knowledge in the classification of steel door frames. Research has shown me that the majority of classification systems are custom made. However, this paper introduces the most commonly used terms and simplify them to benefit home owners and aspiring construction developers. As such, steel door frames classification used in the article relates more to the labeling and classification at Musara and Company.
- Standard Door Frames
A standard door frames comes in two types, i.e. 115mm and 230mm. The image shows standard 115mm door frames. 230mm door frames are usually used on 9 inch walls. These are the commonly known door frame sizes. 115m door frames are easy to erect and frame. In this type, fixing lungs/lags adds extra strength when firmly fixed.
The same purpose is served by the footer lags. Besides door frame alignment, footer lags/lungs brings uniformity with the whole structure. Steel lungs do not rot when compared to wooden ones.
However, it should be noted that, the durability of any steel door frames generally depends on the thickness or gauge used. gauges that ranges from 06mm-1.6mm are characterized by longevity and durability.
Fanlight Door frame
A fanlight door frame is a special door frames that has got two improvisational partitions with the smaller section on the top of the door frame section. It can either be in 115 or 230 design or specification.
Why use fanlight door frame?
What makes a fanlight door frame stand out is its visually impressiveness. It is normally fitted with classy glassing or even transparent glass. The glass section serves the purpose of bringing more lighting in the room. When used as an external door frames, its purpose is for mere decoration or better aeration.
If the fanlight is designed for exterior framing, there is need to insert rubber buffers. Buffers are normally installed at least 475mm above and 940mm below the center line of the keybox.
FIRE RATED DOOR FRAME
Fire rated door frame is an extension of any door frame class with a uniqueness in thickness and usage. Special Fire rated door frames are used on properties that susceptible to fire hazards. They are regarded as fire buffers or property fire guards. Special fire resistant fiber is stuffed inline and fumigated to inhibit fire development. In addition to the above, a special coat is applied to improve the effectiveness of the fire resistance function
Fire rated door frames are generally door frames for bad weather especially when properly coated and fitted. Be that as it may, fire rated door frames are heavy. As such , it can expose any structural weaknesses on buildings. In Zimbabwe house developers tend to favor fire rated door frames on kitchen doors. The general understanding is that these special door frames are expensive.
